Maryland’s historic skipjacks will take center stage this September with three races and heritage events celebrating the watermen, working vessels, and maritime traditions of the Chesapeake Bay.

The events will take place on both the Eastern Shore and Western Shore, giving visitors a chance to see some of the last remaining skipjacks still sailing today. The fleet is descended from a commercial skipjack fleet that once numbered nearly 1,500 vessels. The skipjack later became Maryland’s official state boat, reflecting its long connection to the Chesapeake Bay’s oyster industry and maritime history.

Three Skipjack Events Planned

The celebration begins September 7 with the Deal Island Skipjack Race. The event will feature skipjacks racing on the water, along with boat-docking contests and other waterfront activities showcasing the skills of Chesapeake watermen.

On September 12 and 13, Skipjack Heritage Days will be held at Sandy Point State Park. Visitors will be able to board historic skipjacks, take public rides, tour boats, watch demonstrations, hear music, enjoy food, and take part in family-friendly activities.

The Cambridge Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race is scheduled for September 26 at Long Wharf in Cambridge. The day will include skipjack deck tours and a race on the Choptank River, with a focus on the vessels and the watermen who continue the tradition.

Special Evening Program in Salisbury
The celebration will begin early with An Evening of Skipjacks on August 24 at Salisbury University’s Museum of Eastern Shore Culture.

The program will give visitors a chance to meet skipjack captains, hear stories about life on the Chesapeake Bay, and view Voices of the Skipjacks: Maryland’s Last Sailing Workboat, a documentary focused on the people and vessels preserving the skipjack tradition.

A Rare Look at a Chesapeake Tradition

Each of the September events offers a chance to see as many as 18 of the last remaining skipjacks. The vessels are known for their role as working sailboats used in the Chesapeake Bay oyster industry and remain one of Maryland’s most recognizable maritime symbols.

Together, the races and heritage events will highlight the craftsmanship, skill, and culture that helped shape generations of life on the Bay.
