Join us this September as we celebrate the skilled watermen, historic skipjacks, and enduring maritime traditions of the Chesapeake Bay—with three spectacular races across Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Western Shore.

⚓ September 7 — Deal Island Skipjack Race
Experience the excitement of skipjacks racing—and see the watermen put their skills to the test with boat-docking contests and other waterfront activities.

⛵ September 12–13 — Skipjack Heritage Days at Sandy Point State Park
Come aboard and get up close to these remarkable working vessels with public rides aboard historic skipjacks, boat tours, demonstrations, music, food, and family-friendly activities.

🌊 September 26 — Cambridge Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race
Head to Cambridge’s historic Long Wharf for a day celebrating the skipjacks and the watermen who keep this Chesapeake tradition alive, including skipjack deck tours and a thrilling race on the Choptank River.

Each event offers a chance to see as many as 18 of the last remaining skipjacks—a remarkable fleet descended from a commercial fleet that once numbered nearly 1,500 vessels. Discover why the skipjack was named Maryland’s Official State Boat and learn about the watermen, craftsmanship, and traditions that made these vessels an essential part of Chesapeake life.

A Special Evening of Skipjacks — August 24
The celebration begins early with An Evening of Skipjacks at Salisbury University’s Museum of Eastern Shore Culture.

Meet skipjack captains, hear stories of life on the Chesapeake Bay, and enjoy Voices of the Skipjacks: Maryland’s Last Sailing Workboat, a documentary celebrating the people and vessels carrying this extraordinary tradition into the future.
