Katarina's Obituary

Katarina was born in Sweden to Birgit and Gunnar, the middle child between her brothers, Johan and Christian. She grew up surrounded by family, with summers spent sailing through the Swedish archipelago—an experience that fostered a lifelong love of the water and the outdoors. When Gunnar married Maggie Porter, her family grew to include her stepmother, Maggie, and her step-siblings, Michael, Caroline, and Daniel.

Throughout her early career in Sweden, Katarina worked in a variety of roles, including at IKEA and the beloved toy store, Stor & Liten. She later joined her family’s business, Toroid Corporation, where her entrepreneurial spirit truly flourished.

In 2001, Katarina and her daughter, Filippa, moved to the United States. Over time, she assumed leadership of the family business while also pursuing several ventures inspired by her personal passions. Among those, she became a dedicated advocate for offshore wind energy, devoting countless hours to promoting renewable energy and its potential for the future.

The water always remained at the heart of Katarina’s life. She carried her Swedish love of sailing across the Atlantic, where she met Harold “Stoney” Whitelock. Together they built a life centered around the Chesapeake Bay, sharing a deep appreciation for boating, sailing, and restoring historic skipjacks. Their adventures on the water brought them immense joy and created treasured memories with family and friends.

Katarina was known for her remarkable determination, boundless energy, and belief that there was always a way to accomplish what needed to be done. She approached life with resilience, curiosity, and an unwavering willingness to take on new challenges. Whether leading a business, championing a cause she believed in, or lending a helping hand to those around her, she lived with purpose and generosity.

Above all, Katarina’s greatest pride was her family. She leaves behind her loving husband, Harold “Stoney” Whitelock; her daughter and son-in-law, Filippa and Ben Etherton; her cherished grandchildren, Sofia, Axel, Hannah, Emily, and Harvey; and a grandchild expected later this year—a baby who was already deeply loved and eagerly anticipated by Katarina.

For nearly three years, Katarina fought stage IV pancreatic cancer with the same determination and tenacity that defined every aspect of her life. She passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home, surrounded by the love of her family.

Katarina’s strength, adventurous spirit, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering determination will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
